Monitor flickers

A friend of mine recently bought Viewsonic monitor . For normal use it works fine. When He uses it for gaming though the screen flickers on/off. Any idea what could be causing this. Is it a defect in the monitor or something to do with the computer settings? . Thank you in advance.

I'd look at the video card or his monitor settings. If it works fine for nonvideo intense applications it's ok ,look elsewhere for the cause. Can you give a few more details about the system? OS,video card, processer,motherboard.....................

i kinda have a problem similar to that when i play games. mine sqeels or buzzes with this high pitch noise. if i move it while its doing this it shakes up the buzzing. then i can move it into a certain position and it will stop. im not sure exactly what kind of monitor it is but its an emachines flat screen(not lcd) came with my t2200 model emachines. and i know i know dont heckle me for the emachines buy. ive heard it all before.

as in going on and off? or just like when you look at a TV through a spinning fan?

you could have the refresh rate set at 60Hz, which causes it to flicker, for me anyway, bump it up to 85hz

Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Monitor

also, my monitor on the odd occasion flickers faintly, degaussing stops it

I had quite a problem with my viewsonic monitor. I even exchanged it for a new one; when the new monitor came it was damaged in shipping [thanks ups]. When I plugged in the old monitor with the new cable [that came with the replacement monitor] it worked just great. Now running @ 1280x1024 at 85mz; before I could not run at anything above 60mz or the screen would be unreadable.
So check the monitor cable, some of the ones shipped w/viewsonic monitors where of poor quality.

If you're running XP (even with SP1), then you might want to also want explore a Refresh Rate fix for OpenGL games.

It's a Compaq Presario, with Win ME, with a Cyrix 233Mhz CPU.The monitor is a flatscreen and as far as I know he's got(sorry I don't know exact spec.'s, it's a friends computer)a 32 mb video card. The way he described it was the monitor flicker's when attempting to play a game(a flight simulator I believe). I'm not sure if it completely goes on/off or the screen just flickers. I'll try and find out more info. I'll suggest to him to check his cables and settings to see if that helps.Thank you for all the response's.

if he has his games running a different resolution than the desktop, the screen will go off and the desktop will re-appear at a different resolution just before starting the game
