Smile Z-Buffer Bit Depth

When 3D games utilize the Z-Buffer, what bit depth does the Z-Buffer run at. We can adjust the color depth of our video cards through the display properties, but how about the Z-Buffer – does it just run at whatever depth our color depth is?
