problem with cd-rw

hi
here's the situation:
new dell notebook with cd-rw drive.
trying to burn first cd.

both trying to copy to files to cd in windows and using Sonic RecordNow give me errors. it keeps saying that there is no blank disc in the drive. i've tried multiple disks, both cd-r and cd-rw. not sure what to do next. any suggestions? thanks.

Im having same problem with older toshiba note pad,cd/rw will read any cd,cd-r,cd/rw as long as there is already data there, but doesnt recognize blank media.

We are already thinking of just replacing the drive, please let us know what you find out,
