cd drive ejects even with no cd

Hey guys and Gals,

We are pretty much set on replacing this cd drive, it is an old hp cd/rw.

A year ago the cd drive would occasionally eject for no known reason, and the next time it would work just fine,
now the thing ejects any cd, and once you get it going on its eject frenzy it actually ejects when the drive is empty, takes up to 6 tries to get the darned thing to stay shut, lol.

I tried the drive in my pc and it does the same thing, reason i am asking is because I enjoy tearing things apart and I thought maybe one of you might have an idea where I should look, so maybe I will get lucky and fix the problem!

Thanks in advance...X

there is a known software program that some one can send you that will do that trick to you, otherwise the drive may be defective.

Put in a CD, push the close button, when it first moves to close push in in with your hand, if it closes and plays the CD your mechanism is worn and you need to replacethe drive. A tip I learned here.
