They *should* be able to read a single session CD-R that's been properly closed. Multisession and CD-RW, that's doubtful.

They should be able to read multisession CD-R as well ? I've never seen any CD-ROM that can't read a multisession CD-R, even the old 4x CD-ROM in a 384 and 486 where DOS is running. Multisession CD-R was the best for me when I wanted to copy stuff on these old PCs because the old drive didn't read CD-RW.
CD-RW. . no. I believe the CD-ROM drives had a speed of 16x or 24x when the CD-RW reading feature was implemented the first time.

Multisession means you burn the CD several different times and the CD is left "open" until you decide to "close" it.

A single session is like when you burn an audio CD...it's just done in a single burn and the CD is "closed" when the burning is done.

I have run across MANY older CD-Roms that can't handle multi-session or CD's that aren't closed... the system just comes back that there is nothing in the drive.
