External Drive

OK I bought an external drive enclosure and install a hard drive in it. Plugged it in through my fire wire port.

The drive installs as a CD-Rom, I have tried uninstalling in and reinstalling.

Any ideas on how to make it a hard drive?

I am running Windows XP Pro.

Can you read and write to the drive? If so, sounds like it's being detected as a removable device.

Nothing can be read or written to the drive, comes up as a cd not harddrive.
If you click on the drive it says drive not ready insert cd.

You sure it isn't your CD drive?

You have to partition it before it will be assigned a drive letter and be seen in Windows. Use Disk Management to partition and format it.

Shows up as a cd drive, Has a drive letter assigned under devices with removable storage.

There is no option for Disk Management.

Did the enclosure come with a driver disk? Did you set the drive to master before putting it in the enclosure? You will need to partition it before you put it in the enclosure unless you have Partition Magic or a like utility, not sure about formatting it but I would think you could in windows.

Disk Management is found in administrative tools in XP. Right click on My Computer - select Manage.

I have looked under Disk Management in Administrative Tools, shows as SCUSI CD ROM.

Hard drive set as master.

Restarted computer after uninstalling the Fire Wire Card from Device Manager.
Fire Wire card reinstalled followed by the new Hard Drive. Not sure what the problem was but its working now.
Fire Wire card was working properly before and with other devices while drive wasn't working.

Thanks for all the help

If the hdd is a western digital you need to leave it jumperless in the enclosure, it took me a week to figure this out.
