Signature Character Limit

Hey,

Lately, I've been noticing that a 500 character limit has been set on our signatures. I was wondering if it was going to stay that way - the old vBulletin had I think more around a 1000 character limit, or more less infinite. It would be nice if it can be expanded - I'm getting error messages when I go to edit my signature build.

Thanks,
kram

This limitation really puts a crimp on formatting tags.

I hope the limit will be lifted soon - Using coding in the signature is becoming virtually impossible with this limit.

I fail to see the point in long signatures. They only make loading and scrolling more painful, and some of the "cool" formatting is just distracting and sometimes irritating. Lots of images, colours and different font sizes make the threads appear more like Xmas trees than pages in a computer forum.

You're right, Nuke... you do fail to see the point. I don't think you'll be seeing it anytime soon either. It's one of those things, you either like it or you don't.

To each their own, no?

We do have guidelines here concerning signatures - they are to be kept to a reasonable length and no large graphics are to be used. We haven't exactly defined the limits, but if in our opinion your sig is too big, you will be asked to edit it.

It's not a point of to each their own, it's a point of consideration for others in thread loading times and screen resolution issues, we strive to keep this forum dialup friendly and accessible at low resolutions for those with small monitors and vision impairments.

I also personally agree with Nuke, by the way. I don't even use a sig, never have, probably never will. I also think you are showing a lack of respect for Nuke's opinion, Mr. A.

i totally agree with nuke and GLC, if it were up to me i'd atleast ban pictures in sigs. brief system specs and/or one quote or link or something is about the max i consider appropriate. small pictures like in computerSlayers sig perhhhaps, but then if u give an inch people take a mile i suppose. and why people have to put a big coloured background behind their sigs i dont know.. it just distracts/annoys more. if people want to see specs or whatever then people will look, box or no box, it doesn't need to be highlighted. its like pop-up ads for forums, u might not want to see it but its thrust in your face anyway.
could there be a section in the profile which you could put in your PC specs or whatever u want aswell/instead?
it seems like a competition of who can get the loudest looking sig, and its rather unprofessional IMO. PCmech isn't as bad as some (atleast theres none of the whole 'barely clothed woman picture with PC specs scrawled all over it in taccy italic font' on it) but its getting worse.

'if in our opinion your sig is too big, you will be asked to edit it.'
not trying to be intentionally harsh or single him out, but dont u think krams is a little large? the 3 instances of his sig just on this thread fill up more than a screen-worth on my 1024x768 screen. which is average at the very least. think of those stuck in safe mode at 640x480! also, some of us like to multi-task and not use up a whole screen with one page. and its not uncomon for people to have old 800x600 monitors.
how many people have been asked to alter (due to excessive size) their sig? any?

If you read the new rules, we have set limits. I'm editing MrAustin's sig as we speak because it exceeds the now defined image size limit.

I agree, to much sig is not a good thing. The only advantage I see for signitures at all is so that they can be used to show system specs, therefore the person posting for help does not need to post specs each time, and we don't have to ask over and over in order to be able to help.

Ya, system specs can be shown that way, as long as one is not showing them off.
