temporary suspensions instead of permanent bans

I think we should have temporary suspensions instead of permanent bans for some offences.

I don't, Because I have been here long enough to know that it takes quit a lot to get banned here, Even if dok is in PO'ed mode he still gives warnings(I think..).

If you follow the rules (and common sense), you don't have to worry about anything.

For minor infractions, there is a slap on the wrist and you are asked not to do it again. Everyone makes mistakes, and as long as you realize that you have made a mistake and apologize for it, all will be well.

This has been discussed before amongst the staff, and we have no plans to change our policy in this regard.

Good. People need to realize that actions have consequences and we have to accept them and live with them. We certainly need no more over-indulgence.

They can be banned by their IP address.

We have other ways to take care of that, trust me. Reregistering to evade a ban will result in an immediate ban - and we have ways to detect this.

You can always tell who a person is from their writing style and manners. Even with a new nick a person remains the same person. Some of the banned are not careful enough to leave their personal information blank when they register again and put their AIM handles in the new account. Others try to show they are smarter than the staff and give themselves away easily. Think of it like the teacher banning you from class and then you show up the next day wearing a mask and go sit in the first row.

I think the policy should be left as it is. These forums are nice, clean, and have a great reputation. The reason is that these forums are "ruled with an iron fist, and everybody knows it". Leave it like it is guys!

Was there a particular incident you were concerned with?

I could see a Ban being undone if the situation warranted it. This of course a decision of the mod's.

Would/has something like this ever happened?

No bans have been undone ever, nor will they ever be AFAIK. That is why the mods give warnings before banning someone. When somebody is banned is because he/she has definitely crossed the line and has ignored invitations to behave.

One of the big plusses at PC Mech forums is the sense of respect pervaded throughout the community. I am for permenant bannment as that is the most effective way of keeping grips on respect and other topics listed in the forum rules. Just use common sense and you're probably within grounds of about 90% of the fourms rules.

Right you are, Nuke my friend. Think of it this way guys (and gals), when you were a little kid and you did something wrong your parents would give you a 'time out' or set you in a corner or some such punishment to train you to do the right thing. At some point you were judged to be competent enough to make some of your own decisions and be responsible for the consequences. No more 'time outs'. If you come to PC Mech with such an immature nature as to require 'time outs' or constant reminders to modify your behaviour, you'll be gone in no time. We were all required to read the rules before we clicked Yes to join so as adults we are now obligated to abide by them. The mods here typically let you know if your treading on thin ice - I've been reprimanded myself for crossing the line. But if you're blatant or persistent or disrespectful you'll get no second chance or temporary ban. You'll just be visiting as a guest. Kinda like standing outside the bakery and wondering what all that sweetness tastes like!
