PC-Mech Convention

Wasn't this discussed a while back? I thought there was an announcement about a convention in the works. I think that wold be really neat! I know it would be a lot of trouble, but it would be so cool! Maybe not...Just a thought. What do you think?

Yes, the topic has come up several times, both on and off the boards here.

Yeah, everbody wants to do it, but when you really get down to it, nobody wants to spend the time and money traveling to wherever it would be held.

The only thing a majority of us were able to agree on was that it should be held somewhere in the midwestern US so that it would be equidistant from both coasts, and upper and lower parts of the US.

I know it would be hard to setup and pay for. Well, I guess if everybody wants to do it and nobody wants to do it (odd concept there), you have a problem. Oh well.

Myself, I have decided if there is serious consideration of this and I have enough notice I plan to go.

I have said if we do this, it should be at least 3 months notice so people can make plans, get vacation time maybe, book airplanes.

With enough notice, I could probably do almost anyplace in the US.

In case you're interested below is an old thread covering the exact topic. A Majority of the members "would go if finances and time provided". I'm with Kov Ice here - I like "canidate city" St. Louis - the centre of it all.

If a PCMech convention were held, I would do everything possible to go. As an "employee" and member of this wonderful community, I couldn't pass up the chance!

I've discussed going to a ball game with George and Panama Red, but I might have issues with transportation, getting 500+ miles away from home wouldn't be fun. If it were an official happening, I would be there, though. St. Louis or KC would be great. I wouldn't mind driving to St. Louis - its beautiful up there.

We'd need someone to organize it and actually make things happen. I'd be for a week next June, probably. Or over Spring Break?

I think the mods and admins have something planned - I somewhat recall drisley posting sometime next year. I'm for St. Louis - it's a nice five hour drive there for me.

On a random note, St. Louis was the first ever town that I know of that had a road go around a gas station. I attatched a picture from my visit there this March.

EDIT: Image Photoshoped .

Hey Kram, did the cop in that picture mind you taking a picture while driving? That's hilarious!!!

I vote for St. Louis. And no, not because I live there. It is very much in the middle of the US. I think during the summer would be best, I know that working people don't get off, but students like myself do, so that would free up some people.

Kram, I don't think that is there anymore. I don't remember seeing that recently. Although I don't get around much, so what do I know.

PS

If this happens, I wonder if I could talk my parents into helping with lodging. Haha. Yeah, right!

I can see it now. A bunch of us in a big city and we're all carrying laptop cases. Probably get detained by Homeland Security as terrorism suspects! It would give new meaning to "The Geek Squad" tho'!! hehehe

Maybe we should have a virtual convention

St. Louis is only 5 hours for me too. Funny though last time I spent the night there, was awhile back when they had a flood. No hotels were to be found. Finally found a $120 a night Marriot outside town.

By the way Go Cardinals!

I would try to get to one, but really, why not have it in Buenos Aires? lol, anywhere in the US is possible for me if I had enough notice and time to plan ahead and organize our family vacation around it (if you can't tell we really have no plans of going anywhere, just travel around). I am all in for having a 'virtual' conference, would be slightly easier to set up, but a lot harder to keep everything on a topic and flowing smoothly. I would love to attend a conference, more likely if it happened and became an anual thing I would be able to make on eventually.

I would do all I could to get to a PC Mech convention. It would be fun to meet everyone!

Why don't we have it in Seattle? Only two hours away for me.

Seriously though, St. Louis is really close to the "center" of the country and it would be a logical place.

I think Dok had something planned...a while back, he was asking about any Travel Agents among PC Mech Members/Staff.

I'm all for this.

If I get around 2 to 3 months notice, I can basically go anywhere in the world. I get 20 vacation days per year, so the limiting factor would be financial (gotta have bail money ). The best time for me would be during off days from school since I am currently attending school again.

As for the place, Hawaii or Puerto Rico would be nice. Cricket's private island or rjfvillarosa's hacienda both sounds great to me

Australia also looks tempting. I don't think I've ever been to the southern hemisphere before where toilets whirl the other way around.

A big shindig would be great, but maybe we could look at some smaller, more 'regional' gatherings (as much as I'd love to fly somewhere exotic, I don't know if I could swing it). What if we did some state/province/territory meetings? A little less expensive, a little more do-able and almost as much fun. Other members would of course be welcome to attend other state/province/territory gatherings if they wanted. Just thinking out loud

The problem with regional-type conventions is that you wouldn't get to meet nearly as many people. It's a nice idea, but I think that it would be fun to meet people from other parts of the country/world.

Agreed - if I was back in the US or Canada I could make it to a regional one - but would enjoy much more to make it to a much large one an meet more mechers.

A convention is a great idea, just as long as its in my area lol

I don't know about you, but I would rather put the money towards a graphics card instead of a plane ticket. I think regional conventions are a better idea.

How bout both?
