Locking/Unlocking Threads

I noticed that some of people have brought back threads from like a year or two years ago, I don't think it's too big of a deal, but kind of pointless. I heard the suggestion of locking the thread after a certain length of inactivity, but some said they wanted the thread starter to post back if the had new info. My idea was (I don't know if these is possible) to lock the thread so other people can't bring it back, but the author can. Just an idea. Maybe don't do this in General Discussion (if possible), so people can still contribute to the conversation. Probably needs a little tweaking.

I think maybe if that was done the author could bring back unappropriate threads too.

Maybe have different levels of locked threads. Like certain ones could never be opened again, except by a mod. Then others the other couls reopen it if the need be.

Who will decide this? What's the criteria? I think this is an unnecessary level of complexity; a solution in search of a problem. I don't think that threads being brought back are much of an issue, frankly. If the concern is that you will get an e-mail notifying you of a reply to a long-dead thread, you can always unsubscribe from the thread so you don't get those notices.

Another idea is that you one of the moderators could lock it after X amount of months without a post and then if the creator has something to say he can ask one of the moderators to re-open it.

That's a lot of work for the mods. I don't think it's a big deal either, gonzo, but some people see to get annoyed by this. Wow, I just realized the last sentence of my last post didn't make any sense. I meant to say "Then others the author could reopen if the need be." Sorry about that. As for the criteria, permanately locked threads you be inappropiate threads or guides that are just meant for reference not a help section. That wouldn't change too much. The ones the author could reopen would be ones that haven't been posted in for 1 month or whatever, and if the author has new information or another question relating the original problem, they could reopen it.

We see no need to change the current system. One thing we DO ask is all you folks quit complaining about bringing them back in the thread - just move on, please, complaining is just adding worthless posts. We (staff) will take whatever action we feel is necessary on a case by case basis. If it bothers you that much, just hit the report post link and move on.

What does that link do? Does it just direct the mods attention to the post?

It sends an email to the moderator of the forum.
