Stopping a reply to an own reply

Hi,

in another forum I discovered something by coincidence: If I replied in a thread, and then click on reply (to reply to my own post) I get a message that it's not allowed to reply to an own post for 1480 minutes, and I have to use the edit function.

With that function there won't be accidental multiple replies (because of multilpe hits on the send button), or replies to own posts because people don't know the edit function, or because they're impatient and bump their threads every couple minutes.

This forum where I saw it uses another software (Burning Board 2.3.3), but I believe it's possible with vBulletin as well, since a similar function (only 1 post within 30 seconds, I believe) is active here and the edit button does disappear after a while.
So my suggestion is that as long as the edit button is active, clicking on "new reply" or "quick reply" brings up the information that you can't reply to your own post until xxx minutes, and you have to edit.
Once the edit button disappears, replying shoud be possible again.

This suggestion is similar to what I've found here, but for some reason that hasn't happened even though the mods liked that idea. Maybe this one is easier to implement.

That should only apply if noone else has responded. for example, If I post something, and than someone else posts something, I should be able to post again, no matter how much time has passed, but if I post, and then I want to post again, then your thing makes sense.

Sure. Then you're not replying to your own previous reply.

Actually there are a number of great reasons why we should keep the board open for replies to own post. For one, it is my opinion that Editing one's post should be done out of etiquette more than anything else. However, there are a number of situations where I might reply to my own post. For example:
I've posted some information in response to someone else - an email notification has been sent, and the person has seen the thread with my reply. However, I realize that I might have missed something that is potentially critical; I find it better to send in another reply .. so that it triggers another email notification or shows up as a NEW post. If i simply edited the post, the person might not even know that the information was changed. There are other situations I can think of too, like the FS forum where it is vital to see the progression rather than just seeing the first post.
