A/V Forum in Software?
I often have questions about audio and video related software. It seems like many people want to ask about such things as recording a DVD, how to back up movies, or the best program to convert a certain A/V file type. I usually wind up posting in Video, Audio and Multimedia in the Hardware section (as do many others), though I many times see similar questions in General Software.
Would it be beneficial to have an A/V Forum in the Software section? Maybe this would clarify for people where to post such questions so they could be centrally located. I know I would frequent that particular forum. Thx!

Hey glc. I think that's why most people including myself do post there, but I guess the confusion lies in the fact that "anything A/V" still resides under the Hardware Forum. I originally took that as "any other A/V hardware not previously mentioned."
I count 5 or 6 threads in both the Video, Audio and Multimedia forum and the General Software forum that are dealing with A/V software questions, just in the last several days. My most recent thread dealing with this type of question was even moved from the A/V Hardware forum to the Gen. Software one! I was just suggesting that an A/V Software forum would collect all these inquiries in one spot and maybe clarify where people should post them in the future. Just a thought. Thx again! |

I'm the "mover" there, K-I. We're still discussing it but for now I'll leave things there. I was tending to take the "hardware" title quite literally.

hehe, sure, no problem. Like you said, therein lies the problem. I like the idea of a separate A/V Software Forum, but I'm not in the know enough to say whether there really is volume or need for such a separate forum. Just a suggestion for all of you to chew on as you wish.

Would photography issues be at home there too? I just did a post about Adobe Lightroom which could have gone there. Maybe all these creative pro apps issues should stay together?.

I've made a decision. All A/V stuff, hardware and software, should go in the current forum. Forum description edited accordingly.

i was going to make a new post about the over-moderation of the general software forum, but i suppose this covers a large part of it..
its a good move to edit the description of the AV (formerlly AV hardware) forum, but IMO its not enough.. at minimum u need to alter the description of the general software forum, or put a sticky in that forum. i dont think this is going to stop all the n00bs here, and lets face it most new members here are, as its most commonly found by 'build your own pc' (atleast was), posting AV stuff in the G.S. forum.. theres no 'non-literal' way u can take hardware or software.. they're black and white.. and therefore IMO it would be better to take AV out of the 'hardware' section, or, abolish the software and hardware sectioning completely.. obviously some of the forums within will be all software, such as OSes, and some will be 99% hardware, eg drives.. overhauling the sections (again) would be a lot of work i suppose.. but IMO you've opened up a can of worms.. and it needs a bit more thought? |

Thank you for your input but we have decided to do it the way we are now.

okie, i can understand that you don't want to reorganise the whole thing, but i would have thought a sticky notice in the GS forum would have reduced miss-placed posts a little.
anyway.. do it how thinks best

You may notice we have moved the GS forum down the page to try to keep it from being a catchall - it hasn't seemed to help as much as when we moved GD down. A lot of people are just too lazy to read the forum descriptions and nothing will help with that.
