Lightbulb General Hardware

I had not really looked at the general hardware forum in too much depth until today. I've noticed that its is really never about hardware issues not covered in a different forum. My suggestion is that get moved out of there and put into there respective place so that people whose questions are truely not covered by another forum will have a nice forum to work in.

That's a fair point, but I think as long as there are new members on the forums, people will always post threads in the wrong categories. Most new members will be keen on following the rules of the forum, and I guess posting in perhaps the least specific forum - general hardware - is the easiest option - particularly if they are not sure what's causing their problem. Indeed, many threads could easily fit into a number of forums.

Our moderating team here is excellent, and they do a great job of moving threads when they have blatently been placed in the incorrect forum (say, a networking question in the 'drives and storage' forum). However, they don't have an infinite amount of time, and checking every thread in general hardware would take a lot of that.

I like the General forum as often the poster doesn't know exactly what the problem is, so general posts and go in there.

But when someone starts off by saying...ive got a problem with my video card, or hard drive? (come on...)
and i love the people that start of by saying they want to build a pc and want to know what parts to get!
I think they know what forums they should be using!!

And how many times is that vid card problem acually a software problem? or a power supply problem?. How many times is that hard drive problem actually a Windows install problem? or a cable problem? Look at it this way: if the poster was 100% sure it was a vid card problem, then they would just get a vid card, install it, and be done; why post if you know?

True...then why do they have a video card forum. I don't even always mean problems...people just use the General Forum to put in what they want without even bothering to look at a specific forum!

I'm not sure about that. I've used the general forum myself if the problem could be covered in different areas.

Thank you for your suggestion, but it's going to stay the way it is. My staff does a very good job moving threads that are not in the appropriate forum.

General Hardware used to be at the top of the list, and ever since we moved it to the bottom, it's been a lot less congested.
