Advertising

I haven't been here in a while, and I got a message talking about new features, so I thought I'd take a look. Imagine my disappointment when I was buried in multiple pop-up advertisements!

If you really expect people to want to come back, you need to make the advertising a bit less obnoxious. My reaction to such advertising is usually to delete the bookmark for the site.

Advertisements are fine, but too many "in your face" ads will only chase people away.

Ads help pay the bills here, as does this:

I realize that ads help pay the bills, however obnoxious ads chase people away. I guess it's up to the forum administration to decide that balance. IMO, you appear to have tipped the scales a bit too far in the "obnoxious" direction. I know of no one that puts up with continual pop-up ads for any length of time. perhaps your user base has different tastes. Whatever works for you...

I use IE6, and I see no reason to change my web browser to try to blast advertising. I'd rather go where the environment is easier to live with. I do not have a virus/spyware issue.

I can certainly understand your frustration, but I had a similar problem when I first came to the board a month ago. Within a very short period of time I had no ads appearing. It took me just a few minutes of clicking on some buttons, much the same as getting used to the new buttons on a new car.

That's my view, anyway.

PS: I use Firefox

How many popups do you get? As far as I know, this site never generates more than one at a time, and they are 24-hour capped.

I get about ONE pop-up every 24 hours. Exactly what you said. Its not a full screen pop-up, and is simple to close. The forums are free, so one pop-up that I will never read sure as hell doesn't bug me.

Gunrunnerjohn...There is no way that pcmech just hates your computer and is send you tons of pop-up, ethier you have spyware and malware (...deny it all you want...), or you ISP is sending you pop-ups.

...I just thought of this...If the site isn't being allowed to store the cookie that says a pop-up has been sent in the last 24 hours....I would be you get pop-ups all the time. Just set up your computer to allow cookies from www.pcmech.com and then you will only have one pop-up every 24 hours.
