Aside: The ATT/sbcglobal email issue hurts since i hav been visiting pcmech for yrs. Will use another email service just for this forum if nd be. Wonder if I unblock smtp25 port and add pcmech to my contacts list will it make a difference.
Now to the point: Suggestion: As I continue to grow in my computing wrld, Howto convert old computers to file servers or routers. Finding discussion regarding parts to convert such old systems as Aptivas 213E2U are hard to combiine given our through away mentality. I think its fun and given the condition of our world responsible. Why not at least use our old computers as learning toys instead of just creating yet another non-disposable heap of human waste. My motivation is not political correctness but deep respect for a technology I love. Any like minds out there?

I have SBC Global email and am not sure what the issue is. However, here are some things you can try. You can get a yahoo account and link it to your SBC or at least you could before. I did that when I first got mine. Second you can also get a Gmail account and have the emails forwarded to your SBC. That might work.
As far as old computers, there are things they can be used for. Yes, they might be of some benefit in training, but software and technologies (in addition to demands and security needs) change so much it makes it harder. Even charities that accept old computers to fix for needy children and the like won't accept things more than a few years old as far as I see. Here I am using one 9 years old and although it no longer does everything I would like, is still useful. I would think maybe senior centers, churches, non profits and others can use computers that others think are too far gone. Also, very young children can still have fun on them I would think. There is bound to be other scenarios such as maybe Goodwills and the like. |

The problem is that Yahoo blackholes mail from pcmech.com. The whole AT&T family uses Yahoo email services. I'd recommend Hotmail or Gmail if you need a free account. You are certainly welcome to continue using AT&T/Yahoo, but if you ever need a password recovery or anything that requires an assist from forum admin, it ain't happening.
Our philosophy here is to have a minimum of different forums - if we opened a new forum for every special interest, it would be unmanageable. What you propose would adequately be covered in General Hardware. |
