Idea
I don't know if this is possible or something others would want, but I think it would be useful. What I am thinking of is something that is done on Facebook. When someone replies to something I started or posted on, a little window (transparent blue I believe) pops up that says "so and so replied to your post". It stays opened for only a few seconds, however, I think this would be handy for those of us still online at PcMech in case someone answers a question we have asked, posted a followup question, or simply replied and we wanted to go see what they had to say.

I don't see a way to make that happen within the VBulletin settings.

Yeah, we don't have the ability to do that. Takes an awful lot of server horsepower, too. Facebook has it - we don't.

Well, it was worth a thought. Thanks, guys! Then again, Dave, Facebook has problems a lot too, so maybe they need some server upgrades.

Some people don't want a Facebook account as well.

I don't think he meant linking this site to Shamebook, but to have a feature similar to the one SB has.

Doesn't the "Subscribe to thread" function here come close to what you're asking about?

This feature is already there in different words yet ...
Subscribe to thread is indeed whats asked here.. with minor additions ..the table already exists for subscribed users in the database , generally what is required here is that if user online table shows a 1 ..then "subscribed thread" table can fetch the topic name. by using JS/Ajax or if too hi-tech even HTML5 to show a small FB alike box for time interval 5secs .. now the box showing thing is all easy the only part is to link the online user +subs thread and that can shown without any modification to the db ...explanation to quartet-man

I think the thing that gets close to it is the pop-up notification one gets upon receiving a private message whilst surfing this board.
