DVD Copy
I recently went to a seminar where I received a video DVD. We were told we could duplicate it and share it with family members. How would I make a exact copy of it? Is it just like making a direct copy of a CD? My friend has a Lite-ON 8x DVD burner and I would use his computer. Would I use plus or minus DVD's? Your help is greatly appreciated. TIA.

Get DVDShrink (it's free) at www.dvdshrink.info
Use whatever blanks his burner can burn, usually both. -R can hold a bit more data than +R. It's not quite like backing up a CD to CDR. Commercial DVD's hold roughly 9 gig of data. DVDR's hold 4.7 gig, so depending on how full the original is, how much it must be shrunk to fit. If you want original dvd quality, don't shrink it at all, span it over 2 dvdr's. If you don't mind losing a bit of quality, you can do a full disk backup to dvdr, or just rip the movie only from the disk (ignoring the menus, extra's, and other languages) and then shrink only that to burn. Will this be a lot of work, meaning is it worth the trouble? Is there a difference between ripping and burning? After going to the dvdshrink website, it sounds like there are several phases to making a DVD. Thanks for you help and I will read more about it.

You should be able to make a copy with whatever software came with his DVD burner. This is not a dual layer or protected DVD, so you won't need any special software. In either Roxio or nero simply use the copy entire disc choice.

Cloning a dvd is easy. You probably already have Nero, so upgrade it and just use Nero Recode.
What I was trying to explain, is how to get the best quality of movie, and do away with extras you don't want, and tahe other 3 languages and subtitles you'll never use, and still fit it on one dvdr. This is where DVDShrink really works. |

That is a burning program, yes it should work...for burning the dvdr. It is NOT a decrypter/ripper/encoder/etc. program.
