Operating system problems... many questions
I have definitely messed up my operating system. This is my computer
Dell Pentium IV 1.8 gigahertz 512 MB Rambus memory 80 GB 7200 RPM primary hard drive ethernet card 64mb nvidia GForce2 MX with TV out cable modem Windows XP Dragon NaturallySpeaking software for speech recognition, version 7 preferred Maxtor 80 GB 7200 RPM hard drive for video editing and backup Pioneer DVR-105 DVD writer In the process of moving some files from one partition on my primary drive to another I messed up my computer. It is extremely slow, especially when trying to launch a program from a shortcut. I ran Norton disk Doctor and it found 138 registry errors which it repaired. Before I deep six this system, can you recommend some sort of software that can tell me what I did wrong. And no I did not have restore activated. I tried to install Norton Go-back, but it does not recognize my boot drive. Assuming that I cannot repair what I have I will go ahead and reinstall everything on a formatted hard drive. Is there an online guide someplace that can give me step-by-step instructions for redoing my hard drive. One last question: I ghosted my primary hard drive to another partition on another hard drive. What was imaged to the other partition was only 70% of the size ((about 7.2GB versus 9.5 on the original)) of my original partition. Is this normal? Also the last time I did this I the image I ghosted looked identical to the one on my primary hard drive, same type of folders and everything. This time it has four different images of ghost, each about the same size. Why is this different now? Last edited by Omega Man; 06-13-2004 at 09:10 PM. |

If it was me, I'd buy my own oem copy of XP Home so I wouldn't have to use the Dell restore disks. Then you can do an over the top repair which won't mess with your personal files or any of the programs. Or you can save the files you want and do a reformat and clean install. Either way you'll also need to run Windows Updates again to get you up to date.

Could I do an over-the-top repair with Windows XP professional? And is it true that the restore function on XP professional is better than the one on XP home?
Does anyone have any ideas with regards to my questions on ghost? |

No, you can't do a repair, you would have to do an upgrade.
Don't understand your Ghost question, but it does compress images. |
