Installing dial up connection??
This is kind of a stupid question but...anyway. One of my friends said that you don't need a service provider for installing dial up...legally...is this true? Don't you need a service provider? There is no way of just hooking up the phone line and setting up the pc is there?? Can anyone clerify this for me, haven't dealt much with dial up, but as far as I can tell he is wrong.
Thanks PrackIt |

I think what he is talking about is the fact that with some ISPs you don't need their software to connect. Many ISPs require that you install their crapware in order to connect, but some let you just input a username and a password in DUN (Dial-up Networking) and you are good to go. Of course, you need an account with an ISP regardless and you need to pay for it. Stealing access is of course illegal.

You need some kind of provider. It's been some time since there has been free 56K internet service. A few years ago, they were there for the grabbing.
