QuickBooks GURU's, I need help
Guys,
My cousin owns a resturant and uses QuickBooks, I don't remember which version, but its the basic and not the pro. I think it might be 2003, but again not sure. He is bringing in a faster dell than the machine he is currently using and I need to know how I can get the data from one machine to another. I know for sure that we need to install Quickbooks on the new dell, but how can I introduce all the information that they have saved? we currently have backups so is that the route we will have to take. Any help would be greatly appreciated as we need to solve this ASAP. Edrod13

Should be a no-brainer. First install Quickbooks on the new computer, then either restore from the backup or move the .qbw file from the old machine.

yep...what mairving said. I'd recommend that you move the company file instead of restoring the back-up (if you can).

Are there any other files I should move besides the .qbw one. Also I was reading the Quickbooks manual and it was stressing how important it was to know what date you entered in the installation, so that all transaction from there on would reflect that particular time. They have had Quickbooks running on the older machine for like two years. Would we have to enter that date when they originally installed the software or does it matter. Thanks

Just dump all the .qbw files you can find from the old machine (there will be one for each company, including the sample companies, you can ignore those) into the desired folder on the new machine (I usually drop them into the My Documents structure somewhere so they will be backed up if you do a My Docs backup), then open Quickbooks and browse to open a company.
If you use a CD-R to transfer the files, remember to get rid of the read-only attributes after you drop them. |

When I was learning QB at school, I used to carry a zip disk to transfer the company files (so I can do the assignments on any PC that has QB). I didn't have to worry about the date.

I dropped the .dbw files in program files/intuit/quickbooks basic and all seems well. Thanks for your help.
