Question Http server

I found the indigo/perl server and now I have a web site on my comp I can get to via an IP address. I am wondering if there is any way for free to be able to get to it at say www.mypage.com?

Without registering a domain, no. Although, there are services such as these two that you could use:

http://www.dyndns.org/
http://www.ods.org/

On ODS, under Primary Domains it says:
Please note that you need to have your domain(s) already registered with a domain registrar in order to use this service.

What does that mean?

You have to pay a registrar to register your name for you. This typically ranges from 8~15 per year.

So is all I need a domain name at that rate, then I can use one of their programs, which appears to be free w/ domin name, to link it to my ip? So basically I save myself the charge of web-hosting.

On another note, I currently have cable internet 400 kb/s down, and 30 kb/s up. Is their anthing that would be faster, with out paying toooo much more?

Does your ISP allow you to host a webpage? You might want to check into this first if you haven't yet. HTH

Yeah they do, but it's only 5 megabytes, and it has to be something.home.comcast.net, and I was hoping for www.something.com

That's not what he meant - he meant does your ISP allow you to *operate* a server - which Comcast does NOT. Don't get caught.

Web hosting is so cheap these days you might as well just do that - this will relieve you of the security issues and not eat up all your bandwidth, 256k upstream doesn't go very far. Most hosts are on huge pipes.

I recommend GoDaddy for domain registration. Get your domain registered first, then look around for hosting packages.

GoDaddy has an entry level hosting package for $3.95 a month - that's 25mb of space, 1gb monthly traffic, 1 pop e-mail accoint, 50 e-mail forwarding accounts, 1 MySQL database, and PHP (NO cgi or perl) on a Linux box. If you need more features/space/traffic, there are other hosting outfits that can do better than GoDaddy's next step up, which is $9.95 a month.

Alright, so if I wanted to put computer parts by price into a easy to update database and make like a custom computer pricing applet, could I do that with just PHP and MYSQL?

You wouldn't even have to code much if you don't want to. Check out www.hotscripts.com Once you have paid web hosting and a working MySQL / PHP backend, a world of existing open liecence scripts open up.
