Too Good To Be True?
Looking to buy Xp Pro and Office XP this summer and thought I might try shopping around on the net before going to my local store. One thing that cropped up is the large differences in price between retail and OEM. Am I right in saying the OEM software does not come with peroduct support, and is unable to be upgraded via windows update?
Also, I'd like to hear your opinions on this site: http://piraeus.jganmnbj.biz/?7mFc9oD.UbK0p77smithson I'm a bit sceptical of the prices there charging but if any of you lot know better I'm willing to change my mind :0 Thanks |

Your assumptions re: oem are not true. An OEM package simply means it is being sold without the Retail packaging suitable for sitting on a store shelf. OEM versions of XP are totally supported (the only real support you need is available here at PC Mech!) and updateable at Windows Update. What you are describing is a Pirated copy of XP, aka: Illegal!
The site you've linked has been discussed before, I believe. If I remember corretly, that is one of the Easter Europena scam sites looking to con you out of your credit card numbers. Notice their disclaimer regarding copyrights. Last edited by Panama Red; 07-01-2004 at 07:44 AM. |

Stay way from that site! Prices that low are definitely indications of trouble.
OEM software is the way to go when you are buying an OS. For a good online store, I would suggest www.newegg.com. They sell OEM versions of Windows, they are legitimate, and I have had zero service problems with them. As Panama Red said, the only thing that OEM software lacks is the large plastic packaging and maybe a manual. You don't need either of those things. |

This has to be the third or fourth different version of this site I've seen so far. All with the same pricing, and FAQ's, etc.. Just think, if you are getting major software, for a third of its normal selling price, it's more than likely not legal.

The name of the site indicates trouble: piraeus = pirate.

Cheers lads, I actually found a forum elsewhere on the net dedicated to people that have been stung by these cowboys. Some poor soul lost $200+, whereas someone else actually recieved their goods but they were simply CD-Rs!
As I'm in the UK I'll be using www.aria.co.uk , thanks for the advice lads. |

There is a difference in support policies between retail and OEM M$ software. You get a period of free support with retail, you have to pay per incident for support with OEM.
