.doc are MS Word files. There are several different versions. With the 2003 version, you probably won't be able to open it in Works.

Send a message via MSN to doctorgonzo
The free software OpenOffice should open them if you can't find anything else.

Also if you want, you can email the file to me and I will open it in Words and save it as a works or .rtf file, as long as it isn't too personal.

I sent them back to you as rtf's. Do you want me to give you an opinion on the content of them?

If all you have is an old version of Works, I'd recommend you get Open Office. It's compatible enough with M$ Office to do what you need.

Microsoft Notepad will open .docs, although it has VERY limited functionality. I know it came bundled with the copies of windows XP and 98 I have.

Wordpad that's bundled with Win98 will only open docs made with Word 95 and earlier if I'm not mistaken. The version bundled with Win2000 will open Word 97 docs, I just tested it.

Notepad is a simple text editor, it won't open any Word doc.

I tested out wordpad, which is what I meant when I said notepad (oops!) and the version that comes bundled with xp can open documents made in word xp, although all advanced formatting is lost.
