Computer Scripts

Hello
I am very new at script writing & have never wrote a simple script. Can anyone lead me in the right direction to how to write scripts? I would like to learn how to write things such as logon & logoff scripts but have no clue what so ever how to start. If there any books out there that teach about scripts? I have tried to look online & found some scripts already written & copied them into notepad & saved it as a .bat & tried to run them through a DOS screen & it never has worked. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks-

Windows Script

"Windows Script is a comprehensive scripting infrastructure for the Microsoft Windows platform. Windows Script provides two script engines, Visual Basic Scripting Edition and Microsoft JScript, which can be embedded into Windows Applications. It also provides an extensive array of supporting technologies that makes it easier for script users to script Windows applications."
