Problem with word

I'm working with a system running win 2000. Everytime I try to start MS Word an error pops up (winword.exe error) . I have tried replacing the file with no success. I've also deleted the entire program and reinstalled. Same error. Any clues?

Your normal.dot might be corrupt...try doing a search for normal.dot and renaming it to normal.old. When you open Word, it will recreate it.

Thanks for the reply Cheryl. I tried your suggestion but could not find that file. I uninstalled office 2000 and installed 97. Same problem. I think it may have something to do with winfax but I'm not sure. I tried to uninstall winfax but it won't let me. It says there is a missing or corrupt file.

It's in a hidden folder (application data)...to make this folder visible, in Windows Explorer click Folder Options on the Tools menu. Click View and then select Show All Files

for Windows 2000 the path should be

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

You can also just delete normal.dot if you don't want to rename it. You will lose any customization you made (toolbars, macros, etc.)

Good luck!

Turned out to be a problem with winfax. I upgraded him to XP Pro and office XP. All is well. Thanks again for your help
