digital photography software

other than of cource adobe suites, is anybody aware of DECENT photo editing software, that is cheap (nay, free).

I have Microsoft Picture It Digital Image Pro 7.0 and it is excelent software. It is comparable to Photoshop and has gotten Consumer Reports best buy award several times. I think it's up to version 9 now.

A wonderful program that could help you out is called Gimp There is just about nothing you can't do in it and it's free!

thanks for your help, but the "gimp" website says i need to compile the source code myself, and first off all, this is beyond me, and also take too long

Its a very powerful tool. The issue with using any native Windows suite like Adobe is the cost.

I personally use Adobe Photoshop Elements, which is pretty cheap for 80 USD, but I've come to use a Photo Viewer called Irfan Viewer, which is actually quite easy to use and very handy freeware, per glc's recommendation.

Jasc Paint Shop Pro is consided one of the better one, competition for Adobe, but at a fraction of the cost. It's a great package. The Web price is about $85 but I often see it on sale for about $50 - 60 after rebates. You can check it out here:
