I'm looking for some free (or low cost) alternatives to Partition Magic and Norton Ghost for re-partitioning and imaging my hard drive. Are there any? And if so, are they any good?

The operative word is free. Ranish won't work with NTFS. I don't know of any free disk imaging programs. Some people get Ghost as a bonus with their motherboards.
Drive Image 5.01 and Drive Image 2002 (aka Drive Image 6) will work just fine for what you want. Drive Image has a partitioning program in it. It's like a baby Partition Magic. All you have to do is dump the image file onto a partition that can be read by DOS as DI executes in DOS. Drive Image 2002 is reliable and probably the best choice for a single computer. DI 7 is a pain, takes too long, and is wiggy. Search for it. DI 2002 can be hand today for less than $30. It's well worth the money!

There really aren't many choices out there now since Symantec owns Drive Image and PartitionMagic through buying out Powerquest.
