Ok, maybe I'm dumb but every time I try to use scan disk or defrag in Windows 98 2nd Ed. I get this message that something is writing to the hard drive and scandisk or ?? is starting over - essentially it never gets completed. How can I find out what this is and stop it - remember that I'm the guy they wrote that book for - Computers for Dummies

Try running the defrag in safe mode (hit [F8] while your system boots). Another thing I've tried that seems to work is to unplug your network cable if you have a network, or use a DSL or Cable connection.
But your best bet is to just boot into safe mode, as this usually solves the problem. |

Also you may want to disable any anti virus program you may have running,I think when I used 98 that it slowed down the process of defragging or would give message about something writing to disk unless I temporarly disabeled av.

You could also do it in pure DOS I think.
