Video Encoders

Adobe Premier Pro 1.5 seems to have a pretty good video encoder/export, at least I think it has what I need. Would there be any other reason to purchase a separate encoder like TMPGEnc 3.0 Xpress, Canopus ProCoder or Cinemacraft CCE? Which of those three would you recommend?

You're right, the encoder that comes with Premiere Pro is very good. And most people would not need much else. The benefit of a program like ProCoder from Canopus is you can take a video file (video.avi) and easily create multiple versions of that file with minimal mouse clicks (video.mpg, video.mov, video.asf....). But if you only want to encode to say MPG for DVD authoring, the encoder that comes with Premiere Pro is going to be fine.

Okay, I see what you mean about being able to encode video files with less steps and mouse clicks.

It seems each encoder program have different features, is there one encoder that stands out better than others?

It all depends on what you're going to use it for. In our studio, ProCoder is the best fit for our needs. Considering a good encoder can cost as much as your NLE, do your research and make an informed choice.
