Anybody make this kind of cd burning software??
Does anyone make cd burning software that allows you to "save" to a cd from the file menu, ie, like if you were in MS Word & you would perform file>save to a floppy in the A drive? Can you do the same thing to a cd burner?

I think Roxio's Easy CD Creator enables you to "format" the CD-R so you can drag files onto it. I'm assuming that you can save to it.
I have it on a workstation at work, so I could double check on it on monday.

Both Nero and Roxio have that. With Nero it's called InCD. Roxio now calls their version Drag-to-Disc. You still want to use a CD-RW until it's full, then burn a "permenent" CD-R. With a CD-RW in the burner, it acts just like any other drive, even a floppy.

Thanks TwoR,
I never used InCD much so I'll check it out. My friend has Nero 6.0 and InCD. If I recall, you have to format the cd first, correct? And this takes a bit of time. |

Yes you have to format the CD first. Just like you have to format a hard drive or a floppy before you can use it.
The amount of time required depends. If you have a modern burner, with Mount Rainier support, it takes less than a minute. Without MRW, it takes about 40 Minutes. The quick format won't work if it's not already formatted. RJ

Even back with my early burners, like the HP 8100 (which was what, a 2x?) you could put in a blank / new CD-RW and start using it in short time. If I remember right, it was about a 6-7 minute wait and then start using it. Back then a full format was at least an hour.
I just stuck in a brand new, never used TDK CDRW into my burner. Windows Explorer correctly said the drive is "not accesible." I fired up my format options and Do have the Quck Format option, which I use regularly. Attached is a screen shot: Last edited by TwoRails; 06-14-2008 at 12:12 PM. |

Hm. Strange. I never had that option with my Plextor 12/10/32A. I was using DirectCD back then.

Even though I have InCD on other machines (bundled with the burner software), I never have used it for formatting. So, for giggles, I tried one of my older boxes with an AMD 1.333 T-Bird, a 32x burner, and InCD 3.x. It did Not give me an option for "quick" format.
I have the latest version of InCd, but don't have it installed on this machince as I it is not compatible with Roxio software. It would be interesting to see what options it has. |

It used to take 45 minutes to format a CD-RW. That's why I just use CD R for Packet Writing. The disks are cheap enough.
