how do I ...
how do I run applications from a different drive then "C"
Comfused? Let's say that I am installing a new program and instead of installing it in my C drive (which is the main one) I install it on a removable drive (drive F) How do I access that program later on? Right now everything is installed on C so I go: Start>all programs > and all programs show up....would this be the case if it was installed in drive F? Sorry, if this is confusing! |

Yes. The registry entries will point to the drive. My OS is on "C" and all my application programs are on "D" and they run fine. You will not be able to take that drive to another PC and expect the programs to run because the OS on that PC will not have registry entries for them.

Ok so it does not matter what drive the application goes into, it will always show up under start>all programs>X application?
The way I have my sistem set up is: 120 GB HD partitioned into C:60 E:40 F:20 40 GB HD (pull out drawer) So if I install a new application into E or F it wouldn't make a difference? |

No it wouldnt make a difference, the only thing is that to run a program from your start menu you would have to ensure that your E or F drive were functioning.
background: The entries you see in your Start menu (all programs etc), are shortcuts or links, much like a link on a webpage- they point to where the programs reside. So if you had a program installed on J:\game\hello.exe then your shortcut would "point" to that item. When you click on the shortcut from the start menu, it would then look for the 'J drive', then the 'game' directory and finall start running the program 'hello'. Installation of a program on the other hand has little to do with the shortcut. During installation, you can specify where you want a program to sit, as in J:\game\ ; the installation process in itself is as varied as there are programs, different manufacturers note down different things in different places, generically speaking; when you install a program there are registry entries saying that there is a program installed in the J:\game area; and there are files that will allow the program to run smoothly. |
