XP Installation SATA Error
Hi all
I'm in building a new computer. With WinXP Pro , P4 3.0GHz 800Mhz, 1GB Ram Hitachi 250GB SATA Drive, GIGABYTE P4 Titan GA-8Ik110. Everything is assembled correctly except when Win XP is installing it isnt picking up the Hard Drive. We the bios boots up it is showing. Now I think this is because I need to press F6 or something when the windows installation starts and insert a disk later in the installation for the sata driver or something like that. However there is no referance in the Motherboard manual or any documentation concerning installation of SATA. It does support SATA and comes with the cables etc. I tried email support at Gigabyte but have heard nothing back from them after a week.I tried coping drivers from the Motherboard cd on to floppys and using them but that didnt work so I tried booting to the express recovery on the Motherboard but I get the following error."no hpa enabled drive" Can anyone shed some light on the subject. |

Open your mobo CD and copy the SATA drivers to a floppy. Insert the floppy along with the XP CD and boot up the CD. When XP starts to install it will prompt you to "hit F6" to install 3rd. party drivers. It will then read the floppy, install the drivers and continue on.
With my Asus board I copied everything in the SATA folder except the PDF and GUI files. Chas

Gigabyte Emailed me back with this, I havent tried it yet but this is what the said.
I'll Paste it in for those of us who have the problem in the future. Hi, there is a limitation to Windows xp..it can only read from IDE 0 and IDE1..you need to map the drive to one of these ports. when you do this you can"t physically use the IDE that you have mapped it to. So normally put your dvd/cd on the first ide0 and then you will not put a physicall conection on the IDE 1 as this will cause a conflict. If you have only one SATA HDD or two SATA HDDs need to work independently, it will need to set it to "BASE" configuration. In the BIOS - Make sure the "Onboard H/W Serial ATA " is enable and set the "Serial ATA Function" to "BASE"under the "Integrated Peripheral". You need to prepare the RAID driver on the floppy disk. 1) Browse the M/B utility CD. 2) Open the "bootdrv" folder. 3) Double click "Menu". 4) Type the number for the needed driver (Sil). It will copy the driver to the floppy disk automatically. When you boot from the CD and the Windows setup screen comes up, press "F6" to install the 3rd party driver and follow the instruction to install the OS. Why can"t I install WINDOWS 2000/XP with SATA HDDs? Some files need to be saved to a floppy disk from the CD before the installation. SATA RAID: CD-ROM:\other\sil\si3112r\*.* SATA: CD-ROM:\other\sil\si3112\*.* For the M/B which have RAID function, how to set in the BIOS in order to bootup from IDE3, 4 by either RAID or ATA mode? Please set in the BIOS as follow: Advanced BIOS features-->(SATA)/RAID/SCSI boot order: "RAID" Advanced BIOS features--> First boot device: "SCSI" Integrated Peripherals--> Onboard H/W ATA/RAID: "enable" Then it depends on the RAID mode that you need to set "RAID" to RAID mode or "ATA" to normal ATA mode in the item named RAID controller function. How to set in the BIOS in order to bootup from SATA HDDs by either RAID or ATA mode? Please set in the BIOS as follow: Advanced BIOS features--> SATA/RAID/SCSI boot order: "SATA" Advanced BIOS features--> First boot device: "SCSI" Integrated Peripherals--> Onboard H/W Serial ATA: "enable" Then it depends on the SATA mode that you need to set "RAID" to RAID mode or "BASE" to normal ATA mode in the item named Serial ATA function. |

That may be a limitation of Gigabyte but it certainly isn't a limitation of XP. I have XP on a SATA drive (Asus board) with no mapping. I have a CD-ROM, CDRW and another HD on the IDE channels.
What files did you put on the floppy? Are you booting from the XP CD and hitting F6 when prompted? Chas |
