HOSTS file and Apache

I surf the internet on a webserver. I have a huge HOSTS file with all these blocked ads. The problem is that the DNS requests bounce back to my computer and Apache recognizes it as someone trying to access a non-existent file. Therefore, I eventually get a huge error file in the Apache logs folder. I'd actually like to use it to troubleshoot issues with my server but it's nearly impossible with all these false errors in the file. Is there a way so that I can redirect all the addresses to say, 128.0.0.1? That way I won't get a huge error log. I'm not sure if that would work, but I need to know. I'm thinking that it might cause some long loading times since the browser will actually be searching for a file in a server that doesn't exist.

Here an example of what I got just surfing this forum for a minute and a half. It eventually amounts to a HUGE hundred megabyte file that is impossible to sort through.
