ok soo i want/need to update my onboard video and sound drivers.
now, windows update it suggesting updates to them but i dont know weather i should use that or the newest from the website of the manufacturer. anyway, what is the best procedure to update the (video) drivers? should u run the setup.exe provided by the manufacturer or use the 'update drivers' from the properties on the device manager.. do the old ones need to be removed first? if so do u have to restart afterwards, and would the display still work? its an SIS 630 gfx i think, and i have tried downloading the version 2.09, which is the latest according to sis (current is 2.03) and installing via the setup.exe (without uninstalling the older one) but it gives a black screen when it loads up after the restart after installling it, and then i chose to go back to 'last known good configuration'. i also tried using the 'update drivers' thing (also without uninstalling the old drivers) which gave the same result.. there are also the 2.08d drivers which i can use. and if neither work i can use windows update i suppose, i dont know what version they are but it says they were released in 02 so not the newest i expect. but newer than the current ones. anyway what should i do? thanks

However, you say that after you install the drivers your computer crashes. Two causes spring to mind: 1) You accidently specified the SIS site to upload to you the incorrect driver for your hardware. or 2) The driver is no good for your system. Example of reason 2): I had downloaded the latest ATI video driver for my Radeon 8500 and it crashed my computer to black-screen...so I had to settle for the older driver that worked. If there is an intermediate driver, older than the 2.09 but newer than the 2.03 I would encourage you to try that one (if you are sure you downloaded the correct driver in the first place) Post back if you have more trouble! |

it was a folder, which contained amongst other things setup.exe which seemed the obvious install choice.
do u have to uninstall the current driver before installing the new one? is it best to; 1) use windows update 2) download from the manufacturer and run setup.exe 3) download from the manufacturer and then use windows' 'update drivers' and point it to the downloaded drivers there is 2.08d also which i guess i can try also, but i wanted to make sure i didn't have to uninstall first, and which was the best method, before doing so. |
