Nimo Codec
I'm trying to install nimo codec (any version) but everytime I try, it reads
"Error opening file for writing: C:\\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msvcr70.dll". I'm using Windows ME. I know ME is glitch but I'm just a poor student who can't afford to pay Microsoft big bucks to get XP. Help! |

Is the codec compatible with ME?

I had the same problem. I think it's a problem with the installer. Apparently the installer tries to overwrite an existing version of that file, and fails. You can just choose "ignore" and continue the installation, it's a sign the file is there anyway so it doesn't need to be installed. This seems to work for me, haven't had a problem yet.
PS This was in XP so I don't think it's a ME problem |

Don't use the Nimo codec pack. It's full of hacked codecs and most of them will install incorrectly.
Put that codec pack where it belongs - in the trash. Look around for the Gordian Knot (GKnot) Codec Pack or the Kristal Codec Pack. Both have un-manipulated codecs and install everything correctly and register everything correctly with the Windows registry. Dave. |

I have to disagree. I have used Nemo for a long time with no problems, on several different machines. What makes you think they are "hacked" codecs?

For one, Nalin Alexandre the creator of the Pack say so himself. The DivX and XviD codecs are hacks, as is the AC-3 codec (those are the one's I know are - there are others). The biggest problem with the Nemo pack (and others like it) is how they install their codecs. They absolutely butcher the registry.
A year or so ago, I wasn't computer-literate. I used them for what I do (audio and video editing), but I didn't want to dive very deep into them beyond that. Anyway, my business partner is the computer brains beind our studio. Well...when he effected by a few life changing events, I had to learn about computers. And my first taste on this road was trying to figure out what the Nemo Codec Pack did to my sister's computer. It didn't take much time (and a few Google searches) to discover how porrly the Nemo packs are created. They overwrite on existing and known working codecs, they fail to register in the registry or worse, they register incorrect data and those hacked codecs are terrible. Nalin Alexandre is calling it quits as of a few weeks ago - he says because he's tired and he's finishing school. I say because he's never gotten it right in the first place. Dave. |
