Question about uninstalling programs.
When you uninstall a program is it best to simply do it though add/remove programs, or is it better to use the programs uninstaller (if it came with one)? Or does it simply not matter? Thanks.

This is my opinion...
If it came with an uninstaller use it. If it didnt use the ADD/REMOVE SOFTWARE option within the control panel. I believe that the ADD/REMOVE option uses the uninstaller that came with the program. So honestly it doesnt matter what you use. Sometimes you will have to go into your harddrive anyways and remove what the uninstallers cannot remove.

It doesnt matter. Consider your Add/Remove programs location like your START MENU. It isnt that your programs reside on the start menu, they are merely shortcuts to where your programs reside. The same way, the Add/Remove list contains shortcuts that point to the correct uninstallation program and script that the program has registered with Windows during installation. Mind you Windows isnt uninstalling the program, it is instructing the specific program to start removing itself - which usually amounts to clicking on the Uninstall shortcut that the program made during installation. Sometimes, the script has command line options or switches to the installation program to remove out; at other times clicking Remove from the control panel will give you back the original setup program from where you can remove it. The methods are varied because a s/w may use different methods to load/unload itself onto your machine.
Example: open your registry editor (START > RUN > regedit) try going to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall Check out the subkeys within, it should give you an idea of how the add/remove is laid out. Of course, badly designed programs are always exceptions to the rules - the programs that will not install or uninstall correctly, leaving behind wasted space in the form of orphaned files, and useless registry keys that arent cleaned out... |
