Are these original game disks or burnt copies? - if burnt then their built in security is doing what it is supposed to do and getting around it is both illegal and against forum rules.
or Do you have disk imaging software that lets you copy a CD onto the hard drive so you do not need to put the game disk into the cd drive? If so the same answer as above. If neither of these are it - then can you use the drive for anything else? ie music cds etc.

Wait.
The only thing you can use your D drive for is music otherwise nothing installs from it ?

So - if I am hearing you right the drive works on most disks just not some and the ones you got in Russia definitely do not. Assuming these are good copies (Russia is a hot bed of counterfeit, HL2 has been available there for a long time as an example) have you tried a firmware update to the drive?
What is the drive make and model and the OS you are using? Do the drives read the disks just from a explorer point of view or are the disks completely unreadable? and finally what exactly is the error message? "atempting to access invalied adress D:/,, or soemthing like that" is not too specific |

I definitely recall some games having trouble with some optical drives. The fact that you bought the games in Russia makes this even more likely.
If sdkfz's firmware update won't do the job your only option may be a new drive, ask your friend which one he has. |

"can i find out what the name of my drive??" - simplest and best best bet is open up the case and pull the drive from the mount and get the info directly from the manufacturer label. At that point go to their web site and look for support and updates.
If - for example- the drive is by lite-on you'd go to the URL: http://www.liteon.com/liteon/index.jsp and right there on their front page is a firmware download link, these usually come with the necessary instructions in either an attached text file or a separate pdf. If it's going to be reformatted then put firmware updates on hold until that's done. You might find you don't have to. |
