Mmmm, sounds a bit like the trouble I once had with a conflict between MSN and Windows Messenger. To solve it, go into the options menu of Windows Messenger, go to Connections and switch it from .Net to the other one (I think "Communications Service" or something like that, I can't run Windows Messenger currently since I deleted it
![]() My problem was that MSN Messenger would randomly log me out. The solution after a few weeks of hair pulling was that Windows Messenger (wich I used to chat with before MSN Messenger) was still automatically logging me in .Net on the background. I hope this helps you... |

Could you explain a bit more what the problem is ? What does "whenever i sign and it tells me i have a email, it will have the sound then the message will pop out" mean ? Sorry if I don't make sense myself it's just that I've never used the email features of Messenger so I don't know what part is normal and what part is your problem. Is the problem that this popup keeps returning everytime you sign on (you keep getting the same email) ? Or is it the problem the sound ? Or the popup itself ?

The sounds you get when signing into MSN Messenger are normal. It will also bring up a box saying you have X number of emails. Make sure you have Windows Messenger disabled. You need to go into start/run and type in 'services.msc' without quotes, and scroll down to 'Messenger' and click on properties. Under the startup tab, click 'disabled'. If it is still running, click on shut down. This should take care of the problems with the 2 programs. That is how I have mine set up and I don't have that problem.
As for the sounds when you receive new emails, You need to go to the system sound events, and scroll down to the 'messenger' part and just change it to no sounds. Scomac |

In Windows XP Windows Messenger is "integrated" like Microsoft likes to do, it starts whenever it feels like and if you try to get rid of it other programs start behaving weird. There's a trick using the Group Policy editor (gpedit.msc) where you can forbid Windows Messenger to run at all, or start up at boot. The second one works, and atleast doesn't make it start upon boot anymore, but the first one makes Outlook Express start up with a one minute timeout/slowdown while the OE splash screen is displayed before it will finally conclude that it may not start Messenger and continues. Not very handy. Yes, you can switch of an option in OE so it won't log you into WM when you start OE, but that doesn't seem to solve the start up problem. And if you do allow WM to run (if you don't explicitly forbid it in the Group Policy Editor) it will always start when OE starts. Grrr. The final option that I use now is killing any instance of WM and then renaming it's program directory (C:\Program Files\Messenger) to something else so Windows can't find it anymore. This seems to work best, though it generates a bunch of errors in the System Log.

If you don't have AdAware SE, download it from Lavasoft and install the add-on for windows messenger. It has an option to block messenger.
You can also disable messenger by going to start, run and type-in: services.msc. Then locate windows messenger and double click on it. select "disable" on the menu then: apply, OK. The blackviper website is a good resource for showing what services you may turn off safely. -Kev

If you REALLY want to improve the performance of your machine, don't use messenger, don't use MSN mail and don't use MSN Explorer. There is nothing in MSN that your machine requires to run properly.
Use some other web-based e-mail site. Go to Mozilla.org and download Mozilla Firefox 9.3 as a web browser. I have deleted or disabled all three of these MSN functions. -Kev |
