File problem
Not sure if I'm in the right forum but here goes
I have this file that usually will open with a double click and insert itself in the registry. But now it's giving me a new window instead. Can you help me? The new window will be in the next post bellow I'm using Register Crawler 4.5 Specific Notes .REG Typically used to make repairs to or save data from the Windows registry. Use, with caution, the Windows Registry Editor to create a .REG file. All you have to do is "run" the file (double click on it) in order to insert the values into the registry. Do this with even more caution! Changing the registry improperly can result in your system no longer working. Last edited by john ranger; 06-17-2008 at 09:53 AM. |

File extensions are not case sensitive in 2k/XP.

i know, sorry
John, dblclick the file again and select 'select program from the list' then look if regedit.exe is in there, select it and checkmark press ok if it's not in the list you have to browse it manually...it's located in your windows folder(c:\Windows\regedit.exe) |

Well regedit is not listed in there, is there a way to put it in? I also tried the manual and got it to work but got this error message. I don't get it. Last edited by john ranger; 06-17-2008 at 09:53 AM. |

Are you sure that is a valid registry file? Open it up in your notepad; you should be able to decipher the keys in PLAIN english. If not, it is always safer to avoid importing such registry data.

On the subject of re-associating .reg files; open Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types > (Sort by extensions) Do you see REG listed in the list? If not Click NEW > File extension: REG > Associated File types: Registration Entries.
Then select the REG extension You should see open as the default action. Click the EDIT button Change the following- Action: edit Application to perform action: C:\WINDOWS\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE %1 (change the C:\WINDOWS to suit your own computer's windows drive & directory) Checkmark: USE DDE Application: Notepad Topic: System Click OK Click New for new action and enter the following: Action: Merge Application used to perform action: regedit.exe "%1" CHECKMARK Use DDE Application: Regedit Topic: System |
