Computer wont run any games.. but other applications are fine?

Whenever I try to play I game I get

________________ (name of game) has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. We are sorry for the inconvenience. etc etc

I think it MAY be a virus.. but I wasnt sure so I posted it in the general software forum... These are the following games I tried... which all resulted in that message...

Under Steam
- DoD 1.3
- CS 1.6
- CS Condition Zero
- Counter-Strike: Source

So then i thought... maybe steam was just the problem...

I tried Battlefield 1942... Got the same exact problem... then i tried just random other games... NONE worked... ALL came up with that same error message...

Ive also had another problem... If I leave my computer on... for any certain amount of time.. when i get back... Ive got like 20 Java Plug In Icons on the taskbar... Then when I go into windows task manager... there are like 20 IExplorer.exe's running... And tons of pop ups come up as well...

I search my computer regularly... for spyware... Cleared the "Jar cache" from Java.... deleted all the cookies... Ive got the google toolbar for IE.. (although I dont use IE that often..) And I use mozilla... 1.7 for most things... But still i get sooo many pop ups... And I dont even use any p2p programs or any of that...

Ahhhhh the computers just a mess... Could this be a combination of virii and spyware?!!? any help towards these to problems would be greatly appreciated...

- Gaming Problem
or
- IExplorer.exe And pop-ups constantly popping up...

If you need any more details I'll be glad to give them... thanks a lot... Im lost...

Unexplained program crashes can usually also be attributed to spyware. What do you you use to search for spyware ?

The programs Yuanji mentioned are the only two programs generally accepted to be good, free spyware cleaners. In fact many commercial spyware scanners steal data from those two free programs in order to be able to scan themselves, AND they ask money for it. On top of that, some of those "commercial" spyware scanners even add spyware themselves. Only scan with either Spybot S&D or Adaware (and preferably both since sometimes one finds something the other doesn't).

Spybot S&D
Adaware
