Rescuing files from evil installers
When you have an installer that dies about half way through with a crc error on some insignificant file how can you access the rest of the files after the fail? Surely theres some software to access the files from a .exe installer and extract them? Or is this only possible with the more traditional archives such as .zip .rar etc.

There is nothing to extract from an .exe file. An .exe file is an executable file, meaning it executes machine code. It's not a package containing individual files like a .rar, .bin, or .cab.
If this was a downloaded installer, try redownloading it.
