Want to Remove Linux, Keep Windows

Hello all,

I have seen some similar threads on this issue, but they don't tackle my specific problem, so I thought I would try a new post.

Here is my disk setup currently:

120GB Win, Master
80GB Mandrake 10.0, Slave

When I installed Mandrake, it installed LILO bootmanager, and also set the primary partition of the 80GB drive to active.

I want to completely wipe the 2nd HDD, but I am afraid that if I do that, Windows won't boot because it is not the active boot partition.

Any advice?

First, Wipe the linux drive. Next, boot up with the XP CD and get into the repair console. At the prompt, type "fixboot" and hit enter, then type "fixmbr" and hit enter. That should do the trick

Actually, to make it even simpler, you don't need to use "fixboot". I removed a Mandrake partition from a PC a month or so ago, just used "fixmbr", and "fixboot" was not needed.

It really depends on which drive the linux boot menu is stored on.

If you don't have a problem booting up into windows after wiping the linux drive. Great, you're all set. If not, use "fixboot" and "fixmbr".

Thanks guys. Do I have to change the active partition so that the system knows which drive to look at for the boot record though? Right now it is set to look at HDD2, not the HDD1 that Windows is on. Again, much thanks!

That's what the "fixboot" and "fixmbr" should take care of for you.

Ah, thanks Force. I'll remember that for the future.

It was sort of wierd though. While Linux was still installed, I used fixmbr and fixboot through Recovery Console, and it didn't work. It only worked AFTER formatting the second drive and then doing fixmbr and fixboot again that it worked. Oh well. At least it did Thanks again!
