Diagnostic Tools lists
Hey All,
I am just wondering what applications do you guys have for diagnostic tools? This is what I have so far. Please feel free to add more to the list but provide a link to where I can get it. Trend Micro Systemclean Adaware Personal Edition AVG Anti Virus Free Edition 6 Fixblast Reg Analyzer Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 Stinger AIDA Belarc CWshredder Hijackthis (Thanks to GLC for suggesting me some of them) Floppy(1): Memtest86 I am also going to buy a set of floppies and put each HD diagnostic on it(WD, Maxtor, IBM, etc) Let me know what you think. TIA. |
Can't forget common sense :D
|
I dunno if AIDA ever was offered in standalone form, but its successor Lavalys Everest is. Might be better.
Also, the Ultimate Book CD integrates alot of diagnostics and such that would normally be run from a floppy into a single CD. |

Looks good to me. Mine's in my sig...bottom part. I use EasyCleaner on top of that and use JavaCool's SpywareGuard - not terribly effective, but a nice spyware firewall.

Not necessarily a "Diagnostic Tool", but a software firewall like Sygate, Zone Alarm, Kerio, etc. might be a good thing to have too. Just in case these people don't have a hardware firewall, or a software firewall currently running.

zone alarm
not really a diagnostic but you cant go wrong with zone alarm i doubt the link is necessary- im guessing most ppl have this

It's not a diagnostic tool. Uninstalling it will require some fun post crash diagnostics though. Everest is great, as are Spybot, AdAware, XScan, Trendmicro online, NAI Stinger, and HiJackThis. |
If you want to use Zone Alarm, check out this thread.

for broadband diagnostics, I use the online tools at SpeedGuide:

BartPE ...................
|
I have been using EASYCLEANER for a long time, I think that it may not be the best, but it helps with a little springcleaning from time to time.
I got my copy free a few years ago from microsoft powertoys, but I see now that "toniarts" have withdrawn it from microsft and it is only available from the toniarts site after registering with them and paying a $25 registration fee. |

wasn't common sense mentioned earlier? ;) http://agnitum.com |
ZoneAlarm isn't "evilware". I'm not sure what the newer version are like, but version 4.5 is the one you want to stick with.
|
Yes BartPE is the "can fix about everything utility", makes those pesky registry errors a matter of 5 clicks  . Plus you got your full computer (Including registry) spyware, antivirus, and chkdsk checking. Can even run interenet, and can become an almost fully functional windows. But it is definatly the best thing ever!!!

Another handy tool is the Ultimate Boot CD:
http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ It's a compilation of numerous utilities that exist on bootable floppies that have all been put on one bootable cd(eg. virtually all the hard drive diagnostic utilities from the main manufacturers are included). It was designed for those that don't have a floppy drive. You select what tool you want from a menu that comes up when you boot the cd. Many of the utilities mentioned above are also included. Also, sygate personal firewall is excellent and free: http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm |
I find Microsoft Baseline Security useful.

My Zone Alarm Pro 4 expired so I downloaded the 5.5 free version.
It hijacked my browser and wouldn't let me on the net. It was a real nightmare and ZoneAlarm wouldn't return my emails. I'll never install it on any of my computers again |
That's not a diagnostic tool - but I'm using 4.5 free here with no issues. 6 free caused all kinds of problems.
|
I use TweakNow RegCleaner , microsoft antispyware , AVG , all-in-one secretmaker , sb s&d , hijack this , a-squared , ad-aware 6.0 , cwshredder , FindJunkFiles , Zilla data nuker , and startup inspector for windows , all of these are free and seem to work flawlessly .
|
isn't there a software that does everything. I hate using 100's of software.
|
The Ultimate Boot CD is about the closest you are going to get to something that does everything.

Best tool so far
I use System Suite 6. It's an all-in-one maintenance
program. You can purchase it at Wal-Mart for about $40. |
I am using Advanced Administrative Tools from http://www.glocksoft.com/aatools.htm
It includes 12 different diagnostic tools in one program, which investigate and gather information about your computer, network status, and service availability. |
