Help with Outlook
Hello,
i could not boot from my usual HD, so i installed a new one and installed XP on it, same as the other one. Now i would like to import all of my e-mails into the new installation, but i don't know which are the files to look for on my old drive? I only have the "express" copy of outlook on the new drive, so when i try to do FILE, IMPORT MESSAGES and select outlook on the old drive, i get an error message saying they cannot be imported from the MAPI client!

i know what you're going to have to import is a .pst file that will contain all of your messages. unfortunately, i don't know where it's stored (my copy of outlook runs off an exchange server, where everything is stored there).
i would start by looking in the application data folder of your usernames (in documents and settings). see if you can find the file and try to import it.

You cannot import an Outlook .pst file into Outlook Express. You have to install the same or newer version of Outlook to be able to import. Outlook and Outlook Express are 2 totally different animals, the only compatibility between the 2 is Outlook can import from Outlook Express.

What attached? If you are referring to the link to the M$KB article, this requires you to be able to open Outlook and perform an export - and this is not possible here because the drive it resides on won't boot. If you install Outlook on the new drive, then it's simple to go after the .pst file on the old drive.

Corrrect - if and ONLY IF Outlook is installed and REGISTERED in that particular Windows installation. It can NOT just go after a .pst file. Outlook Express can only import unregistered data from another Outlook Express store directory - in other words, Outlook Express .dbx files.
Quick solution - install Outlook and then import the .pst file from the old drive. |
