Music Downloads

Hi, I'm looking for a good Legal music download program or website. Something without spyware. I know that means there will be a fee. Would appreciate any suggetions. Small review of services would be nice too.

Thanks,
Wan

Right now, Apple's iTunes music service is the most popular out there. I haven't actually tried buying music yet, but I love iTunes software, so I'm guessing it's pretty good.

I've been using www.allofmp3.com...it's based in russia - songs run 5 to 10 cents. You can d/l & encode them as mp3, wma, ogg (whatever that is ). You pick the quality...128, 192, etc. You can listen to a full music sample before buying.

You need to set up an account with $5.00 minimum. I've been happy with it. Some of the newer songs aren't always available at first, but they have large selection of all kinds of music.

why would anyone in their right mind PAY to download inferiour sound quality? When you could just as esily PAY for CD quality audio? MP3 "quality" was only tolerated for mass piracy because of the price: free.

for the simple: I'm not endorsing piracy.

Most of them claim to have "CD Quality Downloads". Are they lying? Or is it even possible to download CD quality music?

Thanks,
Wan

Not with "lossy" codecs like MP3, MPC, etc.. The way that you get such small file sizes per song is because of how the audio is compressed. It takes out the parts of the song that are not really noticable to our ears, sometimes even more depending on the bitrate. If you have a 320kbps MP3 and a 128kbps MP3, the 128 is going to have a smaller file size, good for saving on HD space, but the 320 is going to sound much better.

There are loseless codecs like APE or FLAC, which provide much higher quality. The tradeoff for the higher sound quality is larger file sizes.

Has anyone found a defintive answer on whether this service is legal in the US? From what I've read it is perfectly legal in Russia, but there has been quite a bit of talk lately as to its legality on US shores.

As for my pick, were I to download music, I'd go with iTunes. I used them several times when they had the "free download" with Pepsi for a while. Very fast, good selection as well.

The US isn't the only country with laws. The RIAA might not like you using the service but as long as the Russian courts are cool with it I would have no problem using the service.

itunes is all i use, but, even if i did want to use a competitor i couldn't as they require windows, IE and windows DRM. itunes music store also offers a new free download each week, so 52 free songs per year.

Other than Itunes, there are several other places to get music legally. I believe Real has their Rhapsody network, MSN music, Walmart.com now has downloads for $.88, and the new Napster also has fee based downloads.

A few other ones include, CinemaNow, Musicmatch and MusicNow.

I am very happy with the new Napster. I have bought several CD's on there. I have found a lot more music that I like on there than I have on Itunes or any of the other services.
