OE could be using a DEFAULT file type for Export
Hey again
I tried setting up a simulation of what you are doing ( creating an address book in OE v5 and attempting to export it - I am using Win Me right now which is the 3rd and last version of Win 98 and I have OE v5 installed BUT it is v 5.50.4133.2400 which may not be the exact v5 you are using and the .dll files involved are bound to be different) with quite different results ( my version of OE v5 is jacking around in different ways ). When I try File, Export and Address Book this displays the export tool window with a selection between exporting to MS Exchange Personal address book format or text file, comma separated value format ( which would be suitable for import to Excel say - OE v5 import however only seems to want to import .wab files so not sure if csv for import is OK ). The exchange format is probably what you want. My guess is the save as box is defaulting to a standard address book file type. All I can suggest is that you try to export without specifying a file type ( and hope OE applies a default ). The general procedure is you select an export file format, give your export file a name and destination, then export asks which data fields you want to export and you go to the save stage ( your question seems to jump some steps ). I have tried exporting address books in the past with varying results ( many weird results ). Try to ignore the file type thing and try to save \export anyway and see what gives. hope this helps Web Gecko |

A couple extra things
I haven't done a lot of exporting but :
1. The data field specification stage may only be relevant if you export to the csv\text format. 2. If the save as window is grey with one white field, a browse button to the right and a NEXT button below, then you are on your way to exporting your book. You name your address book file, browse to the folder you want to create it in ( the export file ) and click NEXT. This is not a standard "Save As" window and it has no "file type" displayed like a standard save as function. But you may not be talking about this window and are talking about the final save as window ( in which case the default may be .wab anyway so try to export or save it as indicated above ). long winded yes but I hope you get the result you need. cheers Web Gecko |

Gecko,
If i open my address book and do the same steps, I can export as .wab file only.I did a trial run, saved as .wab in a folder, then imported it to OE and it seemed to work. I was under the impression that i had to save as .csv for backup so i could import it but .wab looks like it will work. Thanks for all your research and help! Ray |

Good to hear it's all coming together
It just goes to show how you can get different results in windows with the same piece of software ( of course Me is a different version of win 98 and
my OE v5 may be different again ). Yours is obviously working ( good news ) whereas mine won't work at all ( doing the same task ). Luckily I don't need it to work right now. Good luck with it all. cheers Web Gecko |

Hi everyone. Not sure if this is the place to ask this, but it looked like the closest forum for it. If its not appropriate please advise. thanks
I just downloaded Udora 6.1 mail client to try out. Question is it asks for the mailserver(incoming) and the smtp server(outgoing). I have a hotmail account. What should go in those two blank space??? Did this a long time ago, but can't remember, and verything I have tried so far does not work. Any help would certianly be appreciated. Thanks in advance..............................Sterlin

Don't have a Hotmail web mail account but have Yahoo web Mail so ....
Howdy
For future reference probably the best way to get the most attention for your question is by posting a new thread on this forum e.g. with this particular Q in mind. That way everyone browseing the forum Qs will see your Q ( this way only people involved with this thread [and moderators] will see your Q ) and you will get faster help. But asking here is fine. I haven't had a Hotmail account for years now but I have been using Yahoo web mail as long as I've been on the net ( since 2000 ). Basically you need to set up POP3 access for Eudora so it can read and send mail via your Hotmail account. You can also forward mail to another address from your web mail account ( Yahoo allows this ). As I said I don't have an active Hotmail account so I can't check the specifics for you. You'll need to log into your Hotmail account and check under help, or options or account controls or some such and find where you can set up POP access. Sounds like maybe you either don't have an active ISP email account or just aren't using it ( using hotmail ). Here is some example info from the similar functions in yahoo web mail : Here are the basic server settings for Yahoo! Mail: Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: pop.mail.yahoo.com.au Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com.au Account Name/Login Name: Your Yahoo! Mail name (your address without the "@yahoo.com.au" or "@yahoo.co.nz) E-mail address: Your Yahoo! Mail address (i.e. user@yahoo.com.au) Password: Your Yahoo! Mail password In order for POP and SMTP to work, you need to sign up to Yahoo! Delivers The server names you need for Eudora may be listed in the info your Hotmail account provides ( you need to locate that stuff ). The names will be different but follow the net host.domain format for the hotmail servers. You will need to activate your POP access inside your Hotmail account in a similar way to yahoo ( which uses the Yahoo delivers function ) i.e. this authorises Eudora to log on and access the hotmail pop3 and smtp servers. The hotmail functions could be a little different. Have a good look around in your account and you will find what you need. Besides your server names you have to create an account in Eudora using your mail name or handle and your hotmail address. Note that if hotmail allows forwarding you can use say an ISP account which will receive your hotmail messages but allow you to receive and send mail via your ISPs POP3 and smtp servers as well ( different server names again and you use your ISP email address in Eudora ). Eudora is a nice client, have fun with it. If you have problems let us know. cheers Web Gecko |
