16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem error message

Friends: I keep getting this error message when I try to run CD games on my computer: "16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem-- An installable Virtual Device Driver failed DLL initialization. Choose 'close' to terminate the application." I am trying all kinds of fixes from the Internet, including the Microsoft fix, but they all fail to work. Any ideas how I can fix this? I am using Windows XP Pro.Thanks

Try running the program in compatability mode. Right click on the shortcut > "compatability" tab > select windows 98 or 95.
