Well, a good DVD ripping software (ripping, not converting) is DVD Decrypter.

Not sure what you mean by "convert DVDs to a Media Player format". .. Windows Media Player can play DVDs if the codec or a DVD playback software is installed.
DVDs are MPEG-2, btw.

And if you want to convert to AVI you need to decide which codec to choose, as AVI is no video format. It can contain just any kind of video, and your Media Player will only play those whose codec you have installed.

Then DVD Decrypter is what you need. With that program, using File Mode, you can copy all files off the DVD and save to your hard drive, and watch the movie from there instead of using the disc itself.

use DVD Decrypter to copy to hard drive then use dvd shrink to take out extra features and just keep the move...

I just copied a movie to my hard drive and it took 7.xx gigs.... so it takes alot of space but it depends on the move.

this program converst a dvd to vcd (mpeg)...

If you have about 3 hours on your hands (thats about the average time) its a great program....

You May want to check out AutoGK. It stores the video in mpeg4 rather than the standard mpeg2 for dvd movies. You can usually get good quality for a DVD for around 700 MB. AutoGK forum here:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64266

You will need to use dvd decryptor first to put the files from your dvd onto your hard disk. There's a FAQ that should help you along with the program/website of AutoGK
