best backup software

My father-in-law has an external hard drive that he keeps hooked up to his docking bay. He wants to set it up so that every time he docks his laptop, it automatically backs everything up on to the external hard drive.
does anyone know of software that will do this for him? It doesn't have to be freeware or anything.
TIA

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but I've found this to be a handy program. It's called Synchronize It!, and it's definitely been worth the registration fee. I use it to back up all the important stuff between the three computers on my network. It updates whatever folders you choose, and I suppose you could select an entire drive to be backed up. Maybe worth a look.

Retrospect from Dantz is probably the best that there is.
