Problem caused by java apps

when certain java apps are started in my web browser (mozilla firefox 1.0) both of my monitors black out except partial title bars and the apps shown on the taskbar and the mouse

then if i refresh the screen and minimize the windows they go back to normal

does anybody have any idea why this is happening or how to fix it?

i'm sure its a problem with mozilla because it happens with IE6 also

btw i have Java(TM) Plug-in: Version 1.4.2_04

edit:
i just opened the java control center thing, screens blanked out again, then my computer crashed, windows said gave me this error signature
BCCode : 10000050 BCP1 : E392482C BCP2 : 00000000 BCP3 : BFB0DB06
BCP4 : 00000001 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 1_0 Product : 768_1

then it linked me to the microsoft site where it said the error occured in the ATI graphics driver.

for now i have removed the java plug in from my computer.

any help?

I'd reinstall your ATI driver - what ATI card do you have, and what driver version? What version of Windows?
